A young father recently confided that he wasn't looking forward to having his relatives over for Christmas. Extended family gatherings tend to leave him questioning his abilities as a parent, he said.

“At last year’s dinner, I winced when I heard my little boy describe his favorite cartoon show to my father-in-law. Grandpa never let his kids watch TV, and I figured he probably disapproved of my approach.”

Many of us can relate to this earnest young man. As parents, we know that raising our children well is a serious calling—much more important than earning a large income, building our dream house, or getting into the most prominent social circles.

At the same time, we often find ourselves confused and perplexed about how to go about the parenting task. Many things seem clear, but others don’t. I know this dilemma only too well.
