What's so "new" about new life in Christ?

new - adj. not existing before; made, introduced, or discovered recently for the first time; already existing but seen, experienced, or acquired recently for the first time; just beginning and regarded as better than what went before.

This is how a standard dictionary defines the word “new.” And in many ways, these definitions can be very helpful as we begin the Easter season. Everything is new! For the next seven weeks, we will hear about the new life that the apostles received at Pentecost. We will learn about the new gathering of believers, which came to be called the church. And we will discover how these first believers came to live out the new commandment to love one another.

Of course, we can read about these events in the Bible. But there is more to Jesus’ resurrection than a two-thousand-year-old miracle. All season long, the readings from Mass will show us that the new life that the apostles experienced is meant for us as well. We can all be transformed just as dramatically as the first…
