How the Eucharist Sustains Us and Lifts Us Up

From the very beginning of time, when God first created the universe, his intention was that we would all come to him to receive the grace, wisdom, and strength we needed. The Book of Genesis uses the image of the two trees in the Garden of Eden to convey this central truth: The tree of life held all the treasures of his divine plan, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil supported the philosophy that we could decide for ourselves what was right or wrong—we didn't need to be fed and sustained by God.

Today, we can encounter the tree of life every time we eat the body of Christ and drink Jesus’ blood in Holy Communion. These precious gifts from heaven are meant to sustain us, rejuvenate us, and open us up to the wisdom of God. In this special issue dedicated to the Year of the Eucharist, we want to take a look at different biblical images that can help us enjoy the presence and power of Jesus at Mass. Because the Eucharist is spiritual food, we want to encourage you not simply to read these articles. Meditate on them as well. Let them open your heart to the Holy Spirit. Keep these images in your heart at Mass so that when you receive Jesus in Communion you can begin to experience his grace in a whole new way.
