It was November 21, two days before Thanksgiving 2000. I had just finished buying groceries and was loading them into my car in the supermarket parking lot, taking pains to arrange a party cake and flowers on the back seat.

I got in, started the engine, and went to lock my doors. Suddenly, a man jumped into the rear seat, grabbed me by the neck, and demanded that I drive.

I was taken completely by surprise. Is this a joke? A dream? Are they filming a movie here? But this was no joke, dream, or movie. Even now, I can hardly find the words to express the terror that seized me as I realized I was being abducted.

I tried to persuade the man to let me go and take my car and jewelry instead. I might have saved my breath. “If you don’t drive,” he said in a cold, hard voice, “I have a gun and I’ll blow your brains out.”

I put the car into reverse as his grip tightened around my neck. What did this…
