In 2004 Audrey Gipson had an unusual inspiration.

It came as she searched for a way to encourage her Confirmation students to grow closer to the Lord and become his witnesses in the world. Her idea: a one-day retreat for the teens and their parents … at Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola.

A Tradition Is Born. Angola, as people call it, is one of the larger, better-known prisons in the United States. Audrey was teaching Catholic inmates there, in addition to directing two Confirmation programs at local parishes. Through the Diocese of Baton Rouge, the prisoners were being trained as “peer ministers” who could visit inmates in cells, dorms, and the prison hospital—to pray, talk, give Communion, and offer literature, including The Word Among Us.
