We all love to boast. Whether it’s about our children, our accomplishments at work, our financial success, or our performance in some sporting event, something inside all of us enjoys drawing attention to our accomplishments.

Of course, boasting does have its good side. We should be proud of our children and our achievements. Even God was “well pleased” with his Son Jesus (Luke 3:22). We just have to make sure that we don’t put other people down in the process or make them feel like failures.

What, then, should we say about this statement from St. Paul: “May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Galatians 6:14)? On one hand, this statement is not a completely accurate description of the way Paul thought. He had no problem “boasting” about his work or the work of his fellow apostles (2 Corinthians 11:10-33; Philippians 2:19-24; Romans 16:1-16).
