What does it mean to take up our cross?

Is there a Catholic alive who hasn’t heard or themselves uttered the words, "This is my cross to bear"?

We all have times when we are challenged to face some kind of trial—and to face it in faith and trust in the Lord. Perhaps “our cross” comes in the form of a troubled spouse or child, the haunting memory of a loved one who died unexpectedly, or a serious, prolonged illness. In this sense, the expression “a cross to bear,” means that we are trying to endure some difficult event or situation without complaining, believing that we can grow closer to God as we walk this challenging path.
