The supermarket was crowded when I rushed inside, intent on getting my shopping done as quickly as possible. I was hurrying down an aisle, when a wispy voice asked, “Excuse me, Miss. Can you tell me where the coffee is?”

I turned to see a small, white-haired woman in shabby clothing. She looked lost, frail, and helpless.

“Sorry, I don’t know.” I wasn’t a coffee drinker, after all. And as a brand-new high school teacher with several English classes, four levels of journalism classes, and newspaper production, TV dinners were just about all I was subsisting on. I hardly knew where to find anything else.

Critical thoughts swirled through my mind as I turned back to my shopping. Really, this woman has a serious memory problem if she can’t even remember where her coffee is! She shouldn’t be out by herself. How can her relatives let her go shopping alone? I’d certainly never let my parents do that.

“Could This Be Me?” My monologue went on awhile, but I had pretty much forgotten about the woman by…

    Dear Patricia,

Thank you for your article.  I hope it touches many other lives as it did mine so that several others will be looking out for others, whatever our circumstance.  After all, we are each other’s keeper.  Thank you.

We must never rush to judgment, yet, we do.  I have been humbled by people that serve others with disabilities - and many have no faith.  In fact, they just reach with their hearts because thy empathize with those in need.  I pray that God welcome them into his kingdom for eternity - and, that I can open their eyes and hearts to knowing He is pleased with their work.

They, just as He, are here to serve - what a great way to earn eternal peace and an earthly paycheck.  I am happy you experienced such servant hood and shared it so beautifully.

Thnk you for sharing this pivotal article. I want so much to serve the Lord and feel that I am not doing anything with the gifts he has given me. Bless you and your family for embracing this lesson he gave to you so early in life. I will keep your article in my heart for I feel sure it will bear fruit through me for the Lord.

    Dear Patricia,

Thank you for sharing a very poignant and interesting real life story!  It is amazing how God speaks to us thru the events, experiences and people he brings to our lives.

I am glad you were not “put off” by the woman or her difficult circumstances.  Thank you for taking that story and sharing it as it may give others the courage to persevere as you did.

You met Jesus in this woman and listened to the Holy Spirit when you stopped and helped her and you grew in faith.
It is in the little things we do. Jesus comes to us if we but open our eyes.
    Great Story!
