The Value of Spiritual “Preventive Medicine”

What if Joseph’s brothers had decided to test their thinking before they decided to sell Joseph into slavery? Imagine how different things would have been if they had the clarity of mind to say: “What we are planning to do is all wrong. Yes, we feel hurt by our father’s partiality. And yes, Joseph really is difficult to live with. But Dad is only human, and Joseph is so young. Let’s go back home and clear the air.”

Most of us have done things that we regret doing. And then, to make things worse, we might lie about what we have done in order to cover up the matter. Sometimes we get away with it, but the wrongdoing remains. At other times, things get tense, and we end up having to deceive and manipulate even more for fear that we will lose control over the situation. And in the process we lose more of our credibility.

Wouldn’t it be better if we had a system that could be on alert all day long? Wouldn’t it be great if we could hear some kind of alarm warning us not to do something that was unfair or just plain wrong? Maybe it would be even better if we had a way to sort through the muddled choices we do…
