The Israelites’ victory at Jericho was sensational. They captured the entire city without losing a single person. And they won this victory simply by listening to God and doing what he told them. This story has to be one of the Bible’s most dramatic examples of the way God calls us to go out in confidence and take hold of the inheritance he has given to us.
The story of Jericho tells us that we can live victorious lives even when logic tells us that victory is impossible. It tells us that by cooperating with God we can change ourselves and we can change the world. Who knows how many broken relationships can be healed through our care and compassion? Who knows how many abortions might be stopped by our prayers of intercession? Who knows how many more people can be lifted out of poverty through our efforts? Jericho is a sign to all of us that if we follow God’s ways, we can be victorious—and some of our victories may be unexpectedly easy!
