Why Small-Group Bible Studies Are Catching On

The story is familiar, yet always gripping. On the afternoon of the Sunday following Jesus' crucifixion, two of his followers are trudging to the village of Emmaus, despondently discussing their Master's death. Sunk in gloom, they fail to recognize the risen Jesus when he joins them on their way. Still, they become riveted as he enters the discussion and explains the meaning of the biblical prophecies about the Messiah.

Later, with their eyes opened to Jesus’ identity, these two disciples look back to their Emmaus walk as a wondrous journey of illumination: “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32). Such excitement is contagious, for it invites us to experience that thrill of discovery for ourselves.

Emmaus Today.

Because Jesus lives, it really is possible to meet Jesus as these disciples did! The One who opened the Scriptures to his first-century followers is doing the same thing for an increasing number of twenty-first-century seekers who want to understand his word.
