On Easter Sunday, we were given an opportunity to assert once again our faith in Christ and to accept our new status as his sons and daughters. After the homily, the priest invited us to renew our baptismal promises and declare our faith in God the Father, in Jesus his Son, and in the Holy Spirit.

Before we were asked to proclaim our faith, however, we were asked some very pointed questions: “Do you reject Satan? And all his works? And all his empty promises?” How easy it can be to gloss over these questions and assume they are simply part of an ancient ritual!

In this month’s articles, papal preacher Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa takes a close look at these questions. In talking about Satan, Fr. Raniero’s goal is not to make us more frightened, but to give us greater confidence in Jesus’ victory. Instead of making us anxious, he wants to teach us how to detect the devil’s movements and free ourselves from his influence.
