Have you ever noticed how some saints’ lives read like one long success story?

From a holy childhood to the founding of a new religious order, they seem to meet only with success and acceptance. Of course, there is the occasional challenge and setback, but for the most part these men and women seem to glide effortlessly into holiness. Then there are the heroic martyrs, who joyfully give their lives for Jesus and whose stories still thrill us. But there is another type of saint: the ones who had to take a long, difficult path and who had to endure painful injustices for the sake of their calling. Their stories aren’t often told, but they have much to teach us about giving our hearts to the Lord and committing ourselves to his church no matter what.
