For the first part of his life, Matthew Kelly had what he describes as a "rather casual" relationship with God. Growing up in Sydney, Australia, he attended Sunday Mass with his family and prayed "sometimes—when I wanted something." But for the most part, God seemed far away.

Then, in his late teens, he began to experience God as closer, more loving, and more exciting than he could ever have hoped or imagined. It was “a call to joy,” a discovery of the true happiness that comes from turning to God and seeking to become the person he created us to be.
