The House of Borgia has gone down as one of the most treacherous, lecherous, and downright evil clans the world has ever known—perhaps the first true crime syndicate family.

From Alexander VI, one of the worst popes ever, to his daughter Lucrezia, famed for her poisoned drinks, to a host of lesser-known but equally vile men and women, this Italian Renaissance family name has become synonymous with corruption, scandal, incest, murder, adultery, and a host of other sins.

And then there is Francis: the “white-sheep … with the Borgia face,” as the poet Phyllis McGinley called him.

Why look at this “odd man out”?
