There’s no other way to say it: St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622) was in love with God.

He was so impelled by a burning desire to make Jesus known and loved, in fact, that he threw all his talents and energies into helping others develop a personal relationship with God by embracing Jesus Christ in their lives.

Those talents were considerable, too. A bishop, preacher, and writer, Francis was both socially adept and brilliant. But despite all his accomplishments, he remained warm and personable. He had a gift for friendship and gentle persuasion that, combined with his theological skill and holiness, was instrumental in his bringing great numbers of people back to the Church in an era when Catholics were viewed with great hostility.
