It’s amazing. No single event has affected so many individual lives over the course of so many centuries as the resurrection of Jesus from the dead nearly two thousand years ago.

Think about how chaotic things were when Jesus died on Good Friday. The apostles were too busy fighting among themselves about who was the greatest to understand what Jesus meant when he said that he was going to his Father. Peter denied even knowing Jesus. And Judas went so far as to kill himself. Everything seemed so bleak.

Jesus commanded them to go and make disciples of the whole world, and they responded with passion and dedication. They were so convinced that they even stayed together in Jerusalem waiting for the Holy Spirit to come upon them—even though they didn’t really know who this “Holy Spirit” was or what he would do!

It ‘s such a confused world. The dominance of the Church seems over. Popular culture revels in plurality and relatavism not only in reference to the ever increasing mingling of cultures in the US but particularly in reference to a the called increasing tolerance for differenet value systems contardictory to Church teachings. And what’s more, the new tolerance, plurality, and relativism are not regared as a lamentable feature of the landscape but rather as a postive value per se. The Pesident and his kind actively champion the advancement of difference of beliefs…. religious, political, and philosophical, many of which are contradictory in themselves and incompatible with others especially the Church.  Tolerance and plurality have now become the trumping overarching value and goal…goods in themselves. There is no grand narrative that would guide and in inform our beliefs. They are regarded as goods in themselves.  There is only this particular set of values, and that set of values…my particular set and your particular set. What a challenge we face. One thing for certain…God is not the author of confusion nor of this curent Babel. What are we do to! I think we have to become really good at challenging the philosophical underpinnings of relativism and plurality. God, Truth, grace, and anything outside the space/ time continuum are now pervasively rejected philosophically by this postmoderrn culture. But we can reclaim the truth by exposing the error in postmoderism, the denial of truth. Then we can better preach Christ!
