God has always wanted to have a people he could call his own, friends who would partake in his life and in his mission. He has always wanted friends who would be so united with him that they begin to act and think as he does. This is what made the saints special. They were God's friends because they desired with all their hearts to live for him, to become like him, and to please him.
Abraham was a faithful servant of God. He was loyal to the end. He trusted and obeyed God, even to the point of being willing to sacrifice his son Isaac. But Scripture tells us that Abraham was not just a servant of God: He was also God’s friend (James 2:23; Isaiah 41:8).
Moses was another great servant of the Lord. He performed miracles. He led the Israelites out of Egypt and through the desert. God was pleased with Moses, and he repeatedly referred to him as “my servant.” But there was something more than a servant-master relationship between Moses and God. God spoke to him “face to face,” and told him, “You are my intimate friend” (Exodus 33:11,17).
