Given my line of work, I inevitably find myself drawn to Jesus' parable of the talents. I reflect on it often and speak about it in my career workshops to Christian groups. Ponder Jesus' words along with me, as I draw out a few simple points for reflection and discussion with regard to your children.

Begin by reading the parable slowly, asking the Holy Spirit to help you hear whatever he wants to tell you through it.

Jesus is talking about talents. “It’s just about money, isn’t it?” a woman asked me recently at one of my talks. Well, no. It’s true that the talent was a unit of money in the first century. In the parable, though, it symbolizes not only money but all the gifts with which our Master entrusts us, his servants.

For reflection and discussion: What idea of success do you want to communicate to your children? How can you help keep them away from a materialistic view that centers on the size of a person’s house, car, and bank account?
