Assess: Reflect on how you currently celebrate Advent and Christmas. Are you happy with your family traditions? Did you choose them, or did they just happen for no good reason? Do you and your spouse agree on them? Are they focused on Christ? Do they reinforce the values you want to communicate to your children?

Be intentional. Decide on your goals, then discuss what specific changes you could make to further each one. Ask the Lord for guidance about how to take or change a stand.

Communicate. If your children are old enough, schedule a family meeting well ahead of time to discuss Advent and Christmas. If you’ve decided to implement new practices, explain your reasons and get feedback, as appropriate.

Drop one, add one. If you’re experimenting with a new tradition, make room for it by dropping an old, less helpful one. But easy does it! Don’t change everything all at once.
