It looked like Hurricane Iwa had swept through the living room.
Paper debris was scattered on the floor, along with magazine clippings, colorful construction paper, poster boards, scissors, marking pens, and bottles of glue. It was just the beginning of our Dream Party, a tradition that began when my husband, Steve, and I were first dating. While most people were out drinking and shouting to bring in the New Year, we gathered in the living room with some college friends to dream about the upcoming year. Then we put it on paper.
More than two decades later, this is still the way we greet the New Year. We do it in our home now, and our children join in the fun. It has evolved into a family tradition and ritual—a way to share our inner spirit and evolving selves and to explore how God might be leading us.
