Summer is the perfect time to turn off the TV and the video games and to reintroduce your family to the great outdoors. Our best family memories are from the hours we have spent enjoying the lavishness of God's love as demonstrated by his creation in nature.
Being in touch with nature is so important for our children because it can become the experience through which they recognize God. As the Jesuit poet Gerard Manley Hopkins once wrote so eloquently: “The world is charged with the grandeur of God.” So powerful is the effect of nature on our souls that St. Paul declared: “Ever since the creation of the world his eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been understood and seen through the things he has made” (Romans 1:20).
Most young children are eager to participate in an outdoor adventure. You may have a more challenging time prying the older kids away from the TV, but we have found that once you do, they too enjoy outdoor summer activities. Here are some ways in which you can encourage your kids to connect…
