Simple Staircase
The straightest path to God is the simple staircase of our daily duties.
The staircase is a symbol for the “one foot in front of the other” form of spirituality that applies practicality to the spiritual journey. Sometimes we become impatient with ourselves and try to take a few steps at a time, only to stumble over our own pride in the process.
If you’ve ever climbed the narrow steps to the top of a lighthouse, you’ll remember that its spiral structure causes the climber to place her focus, not on the faraway destination, but on the very next step, so that she doesn’t get dizzy or disoriented.
