Jesus said, "Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor's, and to God the things that are God's" (Matthew 22:21). All citizens of the empire owed their allegiance to the emperor, but Jesus points out the supreme importance of allegiance to God, for "there is no authority except from God" (Romans 13:1).
As adopted children of our heavenly Father, we are called and chosen to be a holy people, set apart for God’s praise and glory (Ephesians 1:4-6). The Father wants us to share his divine life right now, as well as in eternity, to develop an intimate relationship with him, to speak with him in prayer and hear from him through his word.
We have received a privileged citizenship and with it a call to extend God’s kingdom on earth. This is why, even as a people set apart, we need to see the importance of political affairs.
