The Gift of Each Day

So teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart. —Psalm 90:12

The awareness that our lives are finite can enrich each day that we live. The wisdom that comes with this awareness has been an inspiration down through the ages. “Carpe diem!” or “Seize the day!” arose with a sense of the preciousness of each day. All we ever have is the present moment. Are we willing, then, to make the most of this very time? Life has been called “a parade of holy instants.” When we are in the midst of difficult times, it may be helpful to remind ourselves that we should focus our attention on now—today. As the Jesuit mystic Henri Boulad noted, “The present moment brings me on a plate a hot, burning, absolutely new, and original message which can enrich me infinitely” (All Is Grace: God and the Mystery of Time).

“My always attentive God, the only place I can ever find you is right now. Please don’t let me forget this truth. I can make this moment something important to me. Help me bring my attention to the time I have right here before me. As I’m willing to live so vitally in the present, you will enable me to release the thoughts that weigh me down.”
