What exactly happens in Confession? What does God do that causes people to feel a sense of relief, freedom, and comfort after they confess?

The first and most important thing God does in Confession is that he washes away all our sins and restores our innocence. It is as if he throws our sins “as far as the east is from the west” (Psalm 103:12). As far as God is concerned, the sins no longer exist, and so no judgment or condemnation remains. We are completely free!

When you go to Confession, keep this truth in your mind, and believe with all of your heart that you are no longer guilty. Believe, too, that Jesus sees so much more of you than the sins you have committed or the weaknesses you might have. Remember that whenever he looks at you—and this is especially true in Confession—he sees you both as you are right now and according to his glorious vision for your life. He…
