Consider Your “Cloud of Witnesses”

The Letter to the Hebrews says we are surrounded by “so great a cloud of witnesses” as we follow Jesus, “the leader and perfecter of faith” (12:1, 2).

The author has just finished presenting a long list of witnesses, stretching back to Abel, who have gone ahead of us but are still with us. Since the time of the writing of Hebrews, of course, the cloud has increased monumentally. Every year more people who have died in faith are added to the group, not to speak of the faithful believers who are alive with us during our time.

All of these people, dead or alive, help us on the journey, and we help them. We are more conscious of depending on and relating to the people alive with us in our earthly walk, especially our family and close friends.
