Have you ever wondered what it must have been like to be living in Israel around the time of Jesus? To many people, it must have felt as if they were living through a religious explosion.
First came John the Baptist, a fiery preacher living on the fringes of society and calling people to a radical repentance. His austere lifestyle and words of impending judgment drew thousands to him. He even dared to denounce King Herod publicly, and rumor had it that he would pay for it with his life.
Then, as if John’s desert calls to repentance weren’t enough, another man appeared on the scene: a rabbi from Nazareth named Jesus. At first, his words sounded very similar to John’s: Repent, and believe the good news. But Jesus was also very different from John.
