The two men finished their meeting and as they stood up from the table, they shook hands and walked out toward the restaurant’s exit.
Twenty-five years later, these same two men were back at the same restaurant, only this time they didn’t have just one table. They rented the entire restaurant as they, their families, and all of their employees celebrated twenty-five years of business together.
At that first meeting, there were no official papers, no legal documents, no buy-out clauses, and no promissory notes—nothing more than a handshake between friends. The partnership that these two men established endured because it was based far less on the words that were exchanged and far more on the character of the two men making the promise.
