The title “Mother of God” is the Western church’s equivalent of the ancient Eastern title Theotokos, which means “God-bearer.” In 431, the Council of Ephesus sanctioned the title Theotokos for Mary as a way of declaring and protecting the divinity of Christ. The title declares the most important truth about Mary: She is the Mother of God.
When we celebrate this feast, we honor not only Mary but Jesus, true God and true man. being a “GOD-Bearer” through our baptism and daily conscious YES calls us (me) to wake up - be fully alive and alert to my surroundings throughout the day. it is way too easy to slip into a state of unmindfulness—to get caught up in the web of daily busy-ness and fail to notice the countless opportunities with which GOD surrounds me to offer HIM to His beloved children. my watch has an alarm that beeps at the top of the hour. at first it drove me nuts, but then i began to use it to bring me back to a mindfulness of GOD next to me and to the next person who may be in need of a special grace which i may be able to offer through a kind word or gesture or prayer.
