Life’s important memories come complete with an extraordinary assortment of details that help to underscore them in our minds.

When I think of the life memory that influenced my decision to pursue teaching as a career, I can still remember the color of the bedspread I had at the time. It was light brown with bold lines of red, blue, and yellow crisscrossing the entire area.

I was lying on that bedspread—a young boy entering my preteen years—when I read this line from Scripture: “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God” (Mark 10:25). I became concerned about my salvation.

I knew that my family was not poor. We were never hungry. We were able to drive to visit our extended family for any holiday. Santa was generous at Christmas. My siblings and I felt loved by both of our parents.…
