We have three horses on the Winger place. Their names are Smokey, Turtle, and Spuds, and they each have their own personality. Smokey is the oldest. Turtle is the best athlete and the fastest. Spuds is the biggest and also the slowest.

Have you ever led a horse? You know the old saying, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” I have seen that happen many times. Sometimes you know that horse has to be thirsty, but he just won’t drink.

Leading each one of the horses is an entirely different experience. When I try to lead Smokey through the gate, he balks. I have to puff and pull at his reins and sometimes turn him around and start over. When I start to lead Turtle, he wants to walk right beside me. Sometimes he even gets ahead of me, and he doesn’t even know where I’m going. I think he just likes being the boss. Spuds, however, is a pleasure to lead. As I start to walk off he gets right behind me and follows.…
