“Wouldn’t it be nice to go on a family pilgrimage? I mean a real pilgrimage—to somewhere like Lourdes, or Fatima, or Rome.”

It was the spring of 2000, the Jubilee Year, and I was letting my imagination flow as I talked with my wife, Sheryl. What a great blessing a pilgrimage would be for our family. But with four young children (then ages six, five, three, and one), there was no money for such things.

I drive a semi, but I’m home every weekend, so we have a reasonable home life. We attend daily Mass and pray the rosary together. We try to do everything as a family. We work hard and do our best.

More financially stable folks would say we live on the brink, with no security and no savings account. I can only say with Job, “The Lord provides. The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord” (see Job 1:21).
