Imagine a young father coming home from work. As he walks up the driveway, his three-year-old son spots him through the front window of their home.

In his excitement, the boy begins jumping up and down and crying out, “Daddy’s home! Daddy’s home! Yeah Daddy!” The young boy’s spontaneity and joy can give us a simple yet powerful illustration of what our prayer can be like the closer we come to know the love of our heavenly Father—prayer that is characterized by joy, enthusiastic praise, and childlike freedom.

No wonder Jesus encourages us to be like little children (Matthew 18:3-4)! In a healthy family, a child’s life is uncluttered, his memory is fresh and unwounded, and his imagination is full of hope and in awe of life. Often, newlyweds have a similar experience of freshness, wonder, and freedom in their new life together. Likewise, young pastors often begin their ministries with fresh energy and idealism.
