Do not neglect the gift that is in you. —1 Timothy 4:14

One common way we tend to operate when we’re upset is to generalize our distress to our whole lives. Instead of articulating the specific areas or issues disturbing us, we let them permeate everything. We read our whole life as in trouble rather than naming the particular problem. We also fail to take note of the positive qualities and strengths that we have within us. So when we are struggling with issues that are problematic, perhaps we can move toward healing by clearly naming the specific issues attacking us. At the same time, let’s also name the specific strengths and help we have that support us.

“Lord, my refuge and stronghold, help me with this problem. As I make some practical attempts to resolve my difficulties (name the parts to the problem), I also know that I have you at my side, guiding me along my way. I offer you all my weaknesses and needs, trusting you to help me become strong. Help me to recognize the gifts that you have already given me. I thank you for the ways you have already begun to bring me through my distress. You already live within me and know my problems better than I do. I count on your direction, support, and care for me.”
