The Lord Is Near to the Brokenhearted

Scripture tells us that the word of God is active and living (Hebrews 4:12), and I know it’s true. In my life, there are times when God’s word is moving in me even when I don’t realize it—and only later does God show me how he was working out his promises.

I wasn’t thinking about God’s active word one day in 1993. My heart was sinking. Another miscarriage—I could hardly believe it was happening again. By now I knew the signs, as this would be my third. I tried to pray that this time it wouldn’t happen, but I had little hope. As the days went by and the doctor confirmed my diagnosis, I was told that I just needed to wait for the miscarriage to occur. Still I prayed, and many people around me were also praying.

One evening, when I was all alone at home, a feeling of despair swept over me. I knew with certainty that I had lost the baby, and I could hardly breathe.

At that moment, I cried out: “Lord, save me!” I felt like Peter sinking into the waves of the sea.…
