When I was growing up, my mother introduced our family to the tradition of praying Psalm 91 every evening—and it’s a good thing she did. I memorized it, and it has guided and protected me throughout my life.

This psalm proclaims God’s protection, especially in times of danger, and it became an integral part of the way I view my life and all that happens to me.

Rejection and Acceptance. I attended a Catholic high school run by the Piarist Fathers in the city of Debrecen, in Hungary, and was in the last class to graduate before the Communist state confiscated it. After graduation, I applied to several universities and colleges. My hopes were high, since the president and the basketball coach of one college had promised that they would help me get admitted. But because the Communists labeled my parents as “intellectuals” and because I was a practicing Catholic, no school would accept me.
