I began my teaching career in a junior high school when I was twenty-two years old. By the time I was twenty-six, I had worked my way up to the head of the language department at a nearby senior high school and was already being groomed for administration.

I was married at the time, and my husband and I owned a sporting goods store with a partner. Through our contacts in the store, we became friends with some high-profile National Hockey League players, and our social calendar was very full. Life was good, and we were on our way to (worldly) success.

Crying Out for Help

A few year later, in 1987, my world came crashing down around me. My husband didn’t seem to know I existed. He used so many drugs that he became oblivious to my attempts to sit down with him and work things out. My marriage was failing, and the business began to fail as well.
