What Can We Do As a Family This New Year?

Here are a few positive steps you can take this New Year to become a little more like the Holy Family:

What Can We Do As a Family This New Year?

Article Tools

1. Try to schedule a daily or even weekly time of family prayer this year.

Even ten minutes of prayer will make a difference. Don’t worry if some of the kids don’t want to participate (or if that scowl seems to be a permanent impression on their faces!) Do the best you can and don’t give up.

2. Play Christian music around your home, songs that celebrate the truths of our faith in a style that appeals to the ages of your children.

3. Do your best to attend Sunday Mass together. Worshipping the Lord at Mass each week is the glue that binds your family. Perhaps you can stop on the way home for breakfast or donuts.

4. Throughout the year, try to do a better job of balancing your time between your relationship with God, your family, and the demands of your job. We sacrifice so much to our jobs throughout the year. During this special season, try to put God first in your life through prayer and Scripture.

5. As a family, perform at least one significant service for the poor or for someone in need this year. In regard to your finances, balance these three qualities: (1) Be generous with your family; (2) live within your means; and (3) express compassion toward the poor.

These are good recommendations.  In our family, one thing we look forward to is our yearly family retreat.  We spend one weekend as a family to pray and seek the Lord’s plan for us for the year. At the end of the retreat, we sum up the Lord’s direction for our family in one sentence and we use this to guide us in our decisions and activities throughout the year.  This is one way also by which we are able to regularly breathe life into the vision and mission we have set for our family several years ago.

This is a great idea. Everyone needs a little direction in life. My wife and I have found new faith in the Lord and so far, things seem to be getting better. Our son still needs a little coaxing, but we will never give up on the Lord fixing all of our troubles. Having seen the true miracles God has blessed us with, we have hope for a better tomorrow. The Word Among Us was a part of those miracles. Thank you so much. You are the angels God speaks to us about.
