The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. (Luke 1:35) The first gift the Holy Spirit gives for the new order established by Christ is Christ himself.
Christ and John the Baptist
To Joseph, her husband, the angel said, “Do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 1:20).
Mary visited her kinswoman Elizabeth, pregnant with the child who was to be John the Baptist. When Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. It is an interesting fact that the same Greek verb is used for the baby’s leaping in the womb as for David’s dancing before the ark (2 Samuel 6:16). David leaped before God’s written word; John leaped before the Word himself.
