The best thing we’ve ever done is change the question. When “what did you do at school today?” stopped getting any response but “nothing,” my husband began a dinner-table practice of saying: “Okay, let’s go around and share the most interesting thing we each learned today.” At least one of our children is inevitably not in a mood to talk. However, after listening to a sibling throw out a few things, the temptation to chime in becomes stronger than the stubborn silence. Along with uncovering quite a bit about what is going on in the classroom, this “corny” practice always seems to make for an interesting family discussion. When all else fails, my husband and I start the conversation.
