The attack was met with outrage and condemnation from leaders all over the world, as well as pledges of prayer for the pope. Many news commentators focused on big-picture issues like international terrorism and gun violence. When they did turn their attention to the assailant—Mehmet Ali Ağca—they zeroed in on his past crimes, his possible links to a Turkish terrorist organization, and his supposed motives for the shooting.
