I Thirst

By: Joe Difato

When I was growing up, I dearly wanted to be a professional golfer. I practiced all the time —hitting golf balls on the range in the sun until my hands hurt; putting until my back was sore; then going into the sand traps, where it was twice as hot. I was so dedicated that I often forgot to drink or eat until I was home hours later.

That all changed thirty-eight years ago when I experienced a conversion to the Lord at a prayer meeting. But thinking back to my college days, I can still remember how hot and thirsty I would get, and how much ice water I would drink when I finally got home.

I’m sure we all have similar stories about feeling dry and thirsty. Well, this month we are going to take a look at spiritual thirst. We want to see how Jesus thirsts for us —and how he wants us to thirst for him.how much he wants us to thirst for him.

Thirsty for God. Jesus told us that he wants to give us "living water" to quench our thirst, and that he wants to give us his own "living bread" to strengthen us for the journey of life (John 4:10; 6:51). Why does he want to do all of this for us? Because he wants a bride he can call his own. He wants a people who will follow him wherever he goes. He wants us all to be his friends —people who will lay down their lives for him. And to this end, he wants to give us "every spiritual blessing in the heavens" (Ephesians 1:3).

What do we have to do to become this loving and faithful bride? Above everything else, we have to come to him! God told the prophet Jeremiah the secret to being filled: "When you seek me with all your heart, you will fi nd me with you, says the LORD" (Jeremiah 29:13-14). So I hope these articles help you to see how much Jesus thirsts for us and how much he wants us to thirst for him.

How Are You Doing? I want you to know that I consider all of you a part of the Word Among Us family as well as my brothers and sisters in the Lord. If you have a moment, why not write me or send me an e-mail? Tell me the good and the bad, whatever you want to say about your life and the Lord’s work in your heart. I’d really like to hear from you. While I cannot answer every letter I receive, I do enjoy reading each one. Within a few months, our tech people tell me that I will be able to start blogging — talking to you and listening to your thoughts at our Web site, wau.org. I’m really looking forward to this, and I’ll let you know both in these pages and on our site when we are able to start. In the meantime, may God richly bless you. And may he satisfy our thirst for him!
