There have been times over the past nine years when my attention is drawn to a Scripture passage or the story of a saint that speaks deeply to me. Then I seem to find references to that passage or that saint over and over again, whether in a devotional I might read, during Mass, or in my everyday life. I’ve learned that this is God’s way of etching important lessons into my heart and assuring me of his love. Moses restored my confidence. David taught me to trust. Peter showed me the power of forgiveness.

So when The Word Among Us asked me to write about St. Padre Pio, I was not surprised to see his name on the syllabus for my son’s high...
