On the day of the resurrection, two of Jesus’ disciples were on their way from Jerusalem to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35). Jesus drew near and walked with them, and he began to explain to them why he had to suffer and die. They were beginning to understand, but they still couldn’t imagine that Jesus was alive. Then they invited him to come and stay with them. Luke writes that while Jesus sat with them at table, “He took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them”—the same words that Jesus said at the Last Supper (24:30; 22:19). “With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him” (24:31).
