Jesus Has Won the Victory: The teaching of the Catechism on the devil.

The Church teaches that Satan was at first a good angel, made by God: “The devil and the other demons . . . became evil by their own doing.” (391)

Scripture speaks of a sin of these angels. This “fall” consists in the free choice of these created spirits, who radically and irrevocably rejected God. . . . We find a reflection of that rebellion in the tempter’s words to our first parents: “You will be like God.” (392)

The coming of God’s kingdom means the defeat of Satan’s: “If it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.” (550)

Victory over the “prince of this world” was won once for all at the Hour when Jesus freely gave himself up to death to give us his life. . . . The prince of this world is “cast out.” (2853)

Although Satan may act in the world out of hatred for God, . . . “we know that in everything God works for good with those who love him.” (395)
