According to tradition, as he approached the instrument of his martyrdom, St. Andrew was heard to say, “O dearest cross honored as you have been by the body of my Master, long desired by me, my most cherished friend whom I sought constantly, … take me from men and give me to my Lord.” Andrew’s faith remained alive and strong as he faced his death.

Andrew had been a fisherman and disciple of John the Baptist before he began to follow Jesus. It is thought that Andrew was the first disciple to know Jesus as the Messiah, the first to bring another to Jesus, and later, the first missionary.
