Not My Will but Yours Be Done: Jesus’ Prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane

The Gospel writers do not spare the details when they describe the agony that Jesus experienced in the Garden of Gethsemane on the night before his crucifixion. In Matthew and Mark, Jesus says, “My soul is sorrowful even to death” (Matthew 26:38; Mark 14:34). Luke writes that Jesus was in such agony “that his sweat became like drops of blood” (22:44). Clearly, this was a moment of intense sorrow for Jesus. In his prayer to the Father, Jesus was pouring out his heart. He was hiding nothing.

As we have done in the first two articles, we can look to Jesus to learn about prayer. So let’s meditate on Jesus’ prayer at this...
